Check Consumption

Many householders have little idea how much electricity their appliances use. It is often possible to see a label attached to the apparatus giving the power rating in Watts but often this means very little to the consumer.

These days it is possible to measure the consumption of each individual appliance used anywhere in the home. There are energy monitors available that just plug into a wall socket and give a reading in Watts as well as the actual running cost in pence per hour. Measurements made can be very revealing. Everyone knows that electric fires are expensive to run, but do you know exactly how much per hour yours costs?

PM-230 Energy Monitor

There are often devices in your home that consume energy even when switched off. This is because when they are on standby, much of the circuitry is still operational and therefore consuming power. When these devices have been identified, it can change the habits of the user so that power can be saved by switching off at the mains socket.

The energy consumption of the whole house can also be monitored. This used to be a laborious task involving regular electricity meter reading and switching on and off all the appliances in the house. There is now a very simple way of achieving this on a portable unit called the Electrisave that can be carried anywhere in the house. This unit displays in real time the electricity consumption and cost whenever the user requires it. An additional benefit is that the volume of the greenhouse gases produced in the generation of the power used is also displayed.

Once you have learned about the consumption of all the electrical items in your house you will be well equipped with the knowledge to enable you to save energy and reduce your electricity bill. Users of electricity consumption measuring devices in the home report subsequent savings of up to 25%, so the cost of the monitoring device can be quickly paid for.
